The Goods & Services Tax (GST), a single, multi-stage comprehensive tax, came into effect recently on 1st July, 2017. Ever since the concept of GST was introduced, it has created a lot of buzz. There has been hue and cry from some corners, while many others have applauded it. Social media has been exploding with opinions from celebrities and general citizens alike – and in particular, Twitter has been the mainstay of urban public voice.
At FORMCEPT, we believe that although public sentiment on GST has been varied, it is possible to glean useful interpretations on these diverse opinions through our advanced sentiment analysis. In this post, we present our analysis of 20k+ tweets filtered with #GST from all over the country to indicate a general direction of voices on Twitter.
This is by no means intended to give a public verdict on GST. Rather, this is an interesting exercise in analytics to present the different shades of opinion that have emerged so far about GST.
How many of the total Hashtags, Influencers and User Mentions, that we culled from 20k+ tweets, were unique?
Which cities have the most to say? – Top 8 Active Cities
New Delhi is the loudest of them all, i.e. the most active city in voicing opinion on GST. Of the 2587 tweets that have come from New Delhi, 71% are in favour of GST, while 26% are against GST. New Delhi is followed by Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The following graph shows the distribution of positive and negative sentiments on GST in each of the top 8 Active Cities.
Tweets with positive sentiments towards GST are largely more than those with negative sentiments in most of the Active Cities – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Pune. In Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, tweets made against GST are more in count than tweets made in favour of GST, whereas in Bengaluru, the counts of positive and negative tweets are almost equal. There is also a small fragment of tweets that are neutral towards GST in most of these cities.
Which Are the Most Frequently Used Hashtags? – Top 10 Hashtags
Where there is Twitter, there is Hashtag.
Not surprisingly #India, #GST and #GSTForNewIndia are the most used Hashtag across all tweets we analyzed. The Hashtags that have made it top 10 are a mixed bunch – positive, negative and neutral, as shown below, along with their corresponding relative popularity.
The twist in the tale?
Our initial analysis have thrown two surprising hashtags at us – #MuguluNage and #HodiOmBath! These hashtags relate to a song by the title ‘Hodi Om Bath’, also known as the ‘GST Song’ from the Kannada movie Mugulu Nage. The song went viral during the weeks preceding the launch of GST, and had the maximum retweets as per our analysis.
Who is Leading the Crowd? – Top 10 Influencers
Influencers, or opinion leaders, are those whose comments and ideas receive substantial public support and play a major role in shaping opinions of others. In the case of Twitter, we measured this by tallying the re-tweets. Not surprisingly, Arun Jaitley leads the pack, followed by INCIndia and Shashi Tharoor.
Once again, the ‘GST Song’ made inroads here, with the top 2 mentions as per the initial analysis being Ganesh and Bhuvan Bagga – two celebrities associated with the same movie and song, as above.
Who Made the Most News? – Top 10 User Mentions
‘GST Song’ celebrities apart (the top 2, again), public entities who have been tagged the most in tweets on GST include regional daily Ahmedabad Mirror, P Chidambaram, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) India. They are the ones come to our minds immediately when we think of GST.
